Finding the Perfect Online Project Management Tool day 95

Thanks to those of you who have left comments in previous entries, you have recommended some really good options to me. I checked out ProjectOffice today, and initially I was impressed. It seems to have all the features that I’m looking for – calendaring, a Gantt chart, work and vacation scheduling, and even a wiki and bug tracking. It also has the ability to track expenses, something that I did not list but would be useful. It is built with a slick Ajax interface and so of course it looks very sexy.

However, its slow to load up each tab. The page is divided into different sections by tabs at the bottom, and clicking on each tab the first time results in 5-10 seconds of waiting for the page to load up. The top banner does say that it is a beta, so you can expect a lot of improvements, but right now it’s slow. Also, the Gantt chart is only a pseudo-Gantt chart as well, because there are no dependencies. Also, currently, all tasks are arranged in alphabetical order, which results in a more confusing and disordered display. It would be good to keep tabs on this application, as it does seem to have great potential, but it’s missing too many features to use right exactly now.

Monika has introduced me to a post on the Everything 2.0 blog, which lists 128 project management tools that I could check out. I think I’ll be very busy tomorrow.

  1. Hey Matthew,
thanks for reviewing ProjectOffice.net. We agree with you on the remarks you have and let me tell you that we are working on those issues right now. Therefore, in nearest future you can expect all these little problems to be fixed and ProjectOffice.net to have all that misses.

    All the best,
    Biljana

  2. Though I am biased since I work for the company, you might also check out ProjectSpaces which is a really simple to use online workspace tool. Forum One provides a suite of tools that will help you get your tasks and projects on track (calendars, task tracking workplan tracking, email lists, etc.). While we do not currently have a Gantt chart available, it is in the works. Our plan is to get this rolled our sometime in the second quarter.

Great journal on all the tools out there.

    Good luck hunting,
    Chris
