Finding the Perfect Online Project Management Tool Day 97

My coworker Monika linked me to an exhaustive list of project management tools on Tuesday at the Everything 2.0 Blog. There are 128 items here, and I simply don’t have the kind of time it takes to write up a comprehensive review of each of them. So, instead, I’ll check them over and just write down my first objection to the service, and move on. I might have to cobble together two or three applications to get a compromised solution, so if necessary I will tag some as partial solutions. If I don’t have any objections to a service, well, I’ll stop and recommend it to everyone.

  1. Matthew,

You may be interested to know that Colligo’s SharePoint tools are not just used for offline access to SharePoint. In fact, many customers use our rich client solutions ONLINE because they provide a consistent interface for project management applications. Right click, drag-n-drop, double click – and you have access to all your content. In addition to our SharePoint client, we also have an Outlook Add-In that provides access to SharePoint right in the Outlook interface.

Here’s a link to a case study that outlines how one of our customers uses our products both online and offline: http://www.colligo.com/articles/crowe_chizek_colligo_contributor.asp

More case studies are here: http://www.colligo.com/articles/case_studies.asp

We also have a SharePoint reader that you can download and use for free: http://www.colligoreader.com

    Cheers,

    Barry Jinks,

  2. I like your style of brief reviews. When you decide to pursue online diagramming, try gliffy.com

  3. Thanks for including TimeXchange.net in your search for the perfect online project management tool, though what we are really about is supporting project management (and payroll, and billing, and compliance, etc.).

Time reporting and approval is a pre-process and that is what we provide. If you need project management, than I agree that MS Project is the market leader for a reason. But if you’re one of the millions of people who email spreadsheets around or who really want to simply and improve time reporting and approval, then TimeXchange.net was built for you.

I guess you could say we’re just the right amount “timeclockish” for time reporting and approval.

  4. You’re welcome, Joe. Don’t get me wrong, TimeXchange.net is great at tracking time. If I was in another position that tracked time regularly I would probably use it. I just feel that in a software development environment tracking time, especially to the minute, makes for disgruntled developers and reduced productivity.

  5. Shame you think ‘no Gantt chart’ disqualifies Huddle. We have tons of good stuff in there.

Re Gantt, we are working on it and you will definitely have some sort of Gantt charteresque way of linking tasks soon. Watch this space! And thanks for including us.

  6. You do have a lot of good stuff in Huddle. I’m looking forward to your charteresquity.

  7. Thanks for the short and comprehensive overview!

We also created some miniguides regarding Project & Portfolio Managment containing a list of pm, ppm and p&pm tools.

  8. Thanks for putting this list together. Agree with you that the space is really cluster. We decided to go with the Q at http://www.santexq.com/ and so far we are very happy. They now announced the release of the fully integrated billing feature which will go full circle for us. Hopefully they will keep it free. In any case, we will be happy to pay for the tool.

    Thanks.
    Jim.

  9. 8apps isn’t functioning anymore

  10. Thanks for adding ProjectSpaces to your list. FYI we just added online Gantt chart functionality and some other nice new features. As always though, we’ve tried to keep things really simple for folks with little patience for complexity.

  11. For a simple to use time tracking solution, give TSheets.com a try.
